Aerie didn’t start as an activewear brand, but over the past few years, it’s clearly stepped into that space.
For the longest time, I didn’t take their workout gear that seriously. In my head, it was still loungewear-adjacent: cute, comfortable, but not something I’d reach for on a lift day or for anything remotely high effort. But the more I kept seeing their OFFLINE line pop up- reviews, try-ons, people casually swearing by them- the more curious I got. Because when enough people start comparing a legging to the staples we all default to, I pay attention.
The OFFLINE by Aerie Real Me XTRA High Waisted Leggings kept coming up as the pair to try, and that’s what I’m building this review on. Lightweight, second-skin feel, flattering without trying too hard, basically everything you want in an everyday legging without the premium price tag.
So I finally gave in and put them to the test, lifting, long walks, travel days, and everything in between to see if they actually hold up, or if this is just another case of the internet overhyping a “good for the price” legging.

Who Should Buy These?
- If you gravitate toward leggings that feel barely there, these are a great fit. They’re soft, flexible, and don’t have that overly compressive “held in” feeling, which makes them ideal for lower-impact workouts or just everyday wear.
- If you want leggings that can pass as a full outfit, not just gym gear, these deliver. They’re sleek, flattering, and easy to style, so you can throw them on with just about anything and still look put together.
- If you’re trying to build out your activewear rotation without spending a fortune, these are a solid option. You get a flattering fit and comfortable feel without the premium price tag that usually comes with similar styles.

Who Shouldn’t Buy These?
- If you’re someone who wants your leggings to feel tight, supportive, and locked in from the second you put them on, these aren’t going to give you that. They’re much more relaxed in feel and don’t offer that structured, held-in support.
- If you’re hard on your workout gear or regularly doing high-volume barbell work (deadlifts/cleans) these might not be the best fit. The fabric is on the softer side, which is great for comfort, but it’s not built to handle that kind of wear as well as more durable performance materials.

Sizing & Fit Suggestions
About Me: I’m 5’3” and 122 lbs. In Abercrombie jeans I’m usually a 24/26 regular, and for athletic wear I almost always go with a size small.
For reference, I went with a size small in both pairs—25” (regular, brown) and 27” (long, blue). Overall, I’d say these run pretty true to size. The fabric has a lot of stretch and molds to your body without feeling restrictive, so you don’t get that “between sizes” stress you sometimes run into with more compressive leggings.

Length-wise, Aerie offers short, regular (25”), and long (27”) inseams, which is a nice bonus depending on how you like your leggings to hit. Personally, both lengths worked for me, but I found myself reaching for the regular more often. The long gives a bit of extra fabric at the ankle, which can bunch slightly, while the regular hits cleaner for a more tailored look.

Fit through the waist and legs is very much that “second-skin” feel. They sit high-waisted, but not overly tight or compressive, so you get a smooth, flattering fit without feeling sucked in. If anything, they lean a little more forgiving than structured performance leggings, which makes them easy to wear for long stretches of time.
If you’re in between sizes, it really comes down to preference- stay true to size if you want that softer, more relaxed fit, or consider sizing down if you want a slightly more held-in feel (just don’t expect high compression either way).
PERFORMANCE BULLETS:
Lifting/HIIT: 8.9/10
These leggings have a light-to-medium compression, which normally wouldn’t be my first choice for lifting or HIIT/cardio sessions. That said, I’ve worn them for both, and they actually hold their own surprisingly well.

The XTRA high waist isn’t too high (something I was nervous about when I ordered them) – it sits in a flattering spot and doesn’t roll, but just note that there’s not a ton of structure or support in the waistband. If you prefer a firmer, more locked-in feel for heavy lifts or explosive movements, these might not be your top pick.
I did notice some minor pilling after a high-volume deadlift day where the bar rubbed against my thighs, but given that these were under $40, I wasn’t shocked or upset. Other than that, they’re super soft, stretchy without losing shape, have a comfy “second skin” feel, and the brown + blue colors I grabbed are *chef’s kiss.*

Running: 7.9/10
Similar to how I feel about lifting/HIIT with these – I generally prefer higher compression for running, and these just don’t quite give that. The fabric is on the thinner side and doesn’t offer as much support through the waist and legs as I’d like for longer or faster runs.

I also really prefer having pockets when I run. Aerie does make a pocket version of these, but I didn’t grab them. Based on the material, I’m not sure the pockets would hold up well with the extra weight of a phone (they seem like they could sag or bounce), but since I didn’t test them, that’s just an assumption. Overall, they’re fine for short, easy runs – but if running is your main form of cardio, these probably won’t be your go-to.
Yoga/Pilates & Low Impact: 9.1/10
I really enjoyed these for Pilates. The compression is low enough that they don’t feel restrictive, but still supportive enough to be flattering and secure. They also have a ton of stretch, which made them great for a leg-wrap day at [Solidcore].

Where they lose a few points for me is moisture management – they’re not very moisture-wicking, so sweat marks are noticeable even in the darker brown color I got. And while the soft feel is mostly a plus, this material in particular does make them feel almost slippery against the skin at times. They are more likely to stick to a reformer, mat, or resistance bands rather than to your skin, so at times I did experience them sliding/shifting a bit.
Daily Wear & Comfort: 9.6/10
This is where they really lean into what Aerie is known for. The comfort and loungewear feel absolutely translate here. They have that same soft, easy, throw-them-on-and-go vibe that makes you forget you’re even wearing “activewear.”
The fabric is super lightweight and smooth, with that second-skin feel that doesn’t dig, pinch, or feel restrictive at any point. I can wear these for hours- whether I’m sitting, walking around, or traveling, and they stay comfortable the entire time. They’re one of those pairs you reach for when you don’t want to think too hard about your outfit but still want to feel somewhat put together.

I’m especially obsessed with the brown color- it’s easy to style and works across a lot of different looks. I’ve worn these for everything from errands and coffee runs to airport days and just lounging at home, and they consistently deliver on comfort. If anything, this is where they shine the most. They may not be my top pick for high-intensity workouts, but for everyday wear, they completely live up to the Aerie hype.
Construction Details
The OFFLINE Real Me XTRA leggings are made with a thin, ultra-stretchy nylon/elastane blend that prioritizes a smooth, lightweight feel over structure. They have a very sleek, almost silky finish that gives them that “barely there” look on the body without feeling cheap or flimsy.
The waistband is labeled “XTRA high waisted,” but it sits in a pretty natural spot—high enough to feel secure and flattering without coming up too far. There’s no added reinforcement or drawcord, so the fit relies more on the fabric’s stretch than any built-in structure.

Seam construction is simple and low-profile, which keeps everything looking clean and streamlined. You don’t get a lot of bulk or stiffness anywhere, and overall they feel easy and flexible rather than engineered or performance-heavy.
Final Thoughts:
At the end of the day, the OFFLINE Real Me XTRA leggings fall into that category of pieces you end up reaching for way more than you expected- not because they’re the most technical or high-performance option, but because they’re just easy to wear & feel good.
They’re soft, flattering, and comfortable enough to wear all day, and they strike a really nice balance between looking put together and feeling low-effort. While they may not be my first pick for heavy lifting days or long runs, they’ve earned a solid spot in my rotation for everything else: Pilates, errands, travel days, and honestly just everyday life.

They’ve also held up well through regular washing, maintaining their shape and softness overall. That said, they’re not built for high-friction training, as mentioned I did experience mild pilling after a higher volume lifting session however it didn’t worsen after washes.
They also lean into the whole matching set moment, with coordinating sports bras and a wide range of color options- so if you find one you love, it’s easy to build out a few go-to outfits without overthinking it. If your priority is comfort, style, and versatility over maxed-out performance, these are very easy to keep reaching for.
