I’ve spent the last few years practically living in leggings — testing different pairs through all sorts of workouts, long travel days, errands, and more coffee runs than I am willing to admit on the internet. After hundreds of wears and countless washes, I’m rounding up my top picks from the last few years.
My hunt for the “perfect leggings” actually started about 10 years ago when I won an Instagram giveaway for a pair of leggings from a company based out of my hometown in New York, Greater Than Sports (now known as Greatly & Co).
Up until then, I had never considered investing in a good pair of leggings. Honestly, I didn’t even know what that meant other than what I thought was just “overspending.” But those leggings changed the game for me and elevated my workouts in a way I didn’t expect — and that’s when my obsession with fit, fabric, and function really began.

Sizing Tips and Thoughts
When we’re limited to buying most brands online, sizing can be an absolute guess at times. I tried my best to contextualize my relative sizing thoughts below between different leggings. I’ve also included my dimensions and what I wear in pants.

For my height, I’m 5’3” and weigh around 122 lbs. For form-fitting clothes/athletic wear, I am typically a size small and wear a small (or a 4 which typically translates to a small) in ALL of the leggings reviewed to provide better sizing thoughts. In Abercrombie Jeans and Levi’s I wear a 24/26 Regular depending on the style.

Best for HIIT/Classes: Born Primitive – Your Go To Legging 2.0
I’m new to the Born Primitive world as of this year, but have been very pleasantly surprised with their gear. I’ve worn their leggings, sports bras, biker shorts and sneakers, and the Go To Legging 2.0 has landed itself in my regular rotation when it comes to my HIIT days and F45 Classes.

These are medium-compression leggings.
I got these in their standard 23” inseam length, and they run a bit shorter on me than I prefer. If you’re taller or have longer legs, I recommend going with the 29” inseam.
Why I Chose Them



The Born Primitive Go To Legging 2.0 truly live up to their name for HIIT and class-based workouts. The medium compression offers the perfect amount of support without feeling restrictive during high-volume, cardio-heavy workouts. Whether you’re squat pulsing or repping out some burpee broad jumps, these will move with you and actually stay put – no mid-set adjustments needed.
What really sells me on these is how breathable the fabric feels. I can go from strength circuits to cardio intervals without overheating or feeling sticky from sweat. The fit is flattering, and it’s nice to have the same style available with pockets available for those who prefer.
On top of that – these leggings fall around the $70-$80 price point, and Born Primitive often runs sales that drop them to around $40-$50 – significantly cheaper than some of the other big-name competitors, but without sacrificing quality.
Best For Strength Training: Lululemon Wunder Train
I’m not gonna lie, I was a bit of a Lulu hater in my early 20s. Granted, this was over 10 years ago, before it was “normal” to casually drop $100+ on a pair of leggings, and back when ya girl was making minimum wage (It was $7.50/hr back then, OK!!) But still, I refused to believe spending that much on some spandex could ever be worth it.
Then, after winning the leggings mentioned above and after receiving a Lululemon gift card for my birthday in my 20s, and welp — the rest is history. Twenty-year-old me would never believe it, but fair warning, you’ll see Lulu pop up more than once in this roundup.

Sizing Tips:
These are High-Compression Leggings. If you are between sizes, base your decision on the level of compression you prefer. I went with my standard small to keep the compression high. That said, there is a waistband drawstring so you can always go tighter if you choose to size up.
Why I Chose Them



There is a reason lulu is as popular as it is – they consistently deliver quality that feels and looks good, and for that, the Wunder Train Tight is hands down one of my favorite pairs to grab for my strength days.
These are high-compression, yet still breathable, offering all the support you need for heavy lifts. They are squat-proof, sweat-wicking, and have held up through countless lower body days without any stretching or slipping.
The waistband on these will keep you locked in during your lifts, and they have the signature lulu “second-skin” feel which keeps them smooth, yet durable. I feel like lulu used to have a reputation for pilling, but in the pairs I’ve owned over the last few years I have not had any issues even with multiple wears and washes. At the end of the day, I do feel like the cost-per-wear on these is worth it.
Best for Yoga/Pilates: CRZ Yoga Butterluxe High Waisted Lounge Legging
Okay, yes, I know I caved to the pricey leggings club, but don’t get it twisted, I am still a SUCKER for a lower-priced, good-quality dupe. CRZ Yoga has really made a name for themselves these past few years for exactly that, and their Butterluxe Leggings have easily made their way into my weekly rotation.

Sizing Tips:
I found these to fit true to size. They have a few different inseam options, I went with the 25” and they sit about an inch above my ankles. They are super stretchy and have a lower compression, so if you are looking for a tighter fit you may want to consider sizing down.
Why I Chose Them



Let me just start by saying, the CRZ Yoga butterluxe leggings are a damn near perfect dupe for the lululemon aligns, at a fraction of the cost. They’re incredibly stretchy and flexible while still holding their shape and providing light/medium support. IMO, they are perfect for yoga, pilates, low impact work, and just everyday wear when you’re going for those comfy athleisure vibes.
I love how soft these are, they have that same buttery weightless feel that align lovers are obsessed with, and have held up great through multiple washes. They also come in multiple lengths & colors, and have a pocket style option which makes it easy to get the look and functionality you want without spending $100s.
On days I don’t need high compression and want something I can move, fold, and stretch in comfortably, these are the pair I reach for over and over again. They’re honestly one of the best-value leggings I’ve tested to date – comfort, quality and affordability all in one.
Best for Running: Lululemon Fast and Free Tight
Let me set the record straight: running is not my go-to choice of exercise, but we’ve been training for two HYROX competitions this year, so upping my cardio game has been a top priority. When it comes to running-focused leggings, the market is flooded with options, but the Fast and Free Tight has easily become my top pick.

Sizing Tips:
These are a high-waist, high-compression tight. I went with my usual Lululemon size (4, 28”) and they fit TTS. I keep my phone in the side pocket during runs- if you plan to do the same, I recommend keeping your usual size so there’s enough compression without the phone making them feel weighed down. If you prefer less compression, you can likely size up and still feel a good amount of support with these.

I’m pretty picky when it comes to my running gear – like I said, I already don’t really love running (actively trying to change my mindset on this one… heavy on the trying) so any ounce of added discomfort and.. Let’s just say I really do not need any other excuses to walk it out. Some non-negotiables for me when it comes to leggings I’ll run in are breathability, compression, and pockets that feel secure without weighing them down.
The lululemon fast and free tights check every box. They’re extremely lightweight and breathable, with enough compression to stay put so you don’t feel like you constantly need to pull them up. The inner waistband drawstring is a clutch added feature, and the five-pocket layout is super functional — tight enough to hold my phone securely, stretchy enough that I can grab it easily to check my pace.
Yes, I know these are on the pricier side, but for how durable they are and how good they feel during runs, the cost-per-wear is completely worth it for me. These genuinely help make running feel easier.
Best for Budget Shoppers: COLORFULKOALA Dreamlux Legging
Maybe it’s a little controversial, but I am a big fan of the rising trends of dupes and wallet-friendly finds. If you’re on the hunt for a legging that offers a wide range of colors, comfort, and legit performance without breaking the bank, the COLORFULKOALA Dreamlux Legging might just be your new best friend.

I’ve worn them for yoga, pilates, strength training, and travel- with zero digging, rolling, or constant adjustments. They’ve also held up shockingly well through multiple washes so far without any fading or pilling. They might be a cheaper alternative, but they don’t feel cheap – which we all know is a gamble when it comes to dupes.

Best for Versatility: Alo Airlift Legging
I’ve owned a few Alo leggings in the past couple of years. I got this pair with the intention of wearing them specifically for pilates, but after testing the Airlift Legging this past summer, my mind was quickly changed. They went from a “pilates-only” pair to one I reach for constantly, because they somehow work for literally everything.

I ordered my usual size small in these, and the ⅞ inch length falls an inch or two above my ankle, and there’s a 28” inseam for my long-legged friends. There is a bit of extra fabric in the hip area for me, I prefer that over feeling too restricted, but if that’s problematic for you I’d consider sizing down.
Why I Chose Them



What sets the Alo Airlift Legging apart for me is the mix of performance and style. They’re compressive enough to strength work and cardio circuits, but smooth and stretchy enough to feel comfortable during Pilates and mobility day.
The fabric has a sleek, polished and almost Matte finish that instantly elevates any outfit. I wear these with an oversized sweater and feel comfortable and put together without trying.
